Tutorial: Microalgae – Microcosmos

With Lolita Tučinskaitė

The tutorial invites to get to know the complex world of microalgae better. It gives a closer look and examines these organisms through a microscope, reflects on their global significance for the planet and their possible use in art.

Lolita Tučinskaitė combines art and science to work not only with living organisms, but also with their representation in art. She focuses on the empirical memories of human experiences of nature, their significance and vividness in the perceiver‘s memory. In her work she aims to convey tactile sensations through vision and understanding.

Venue: SODAS 2123 Alt Lab (Vitebsko str. 23, 2nd floor)

Did you know that on average every second molecule of oxygen we breathe in is produced by marine microalgae? They are also a viable source of renewable energy that does not occupy arable land areas and is characterized by high yields. For example, a bioreactor filled with chlorella vulgaris microalgae can absorb CO2 400 times more efficiently than any tree. Therefore, this large and diverse group of aquatic organisms belonging to the protist kingdom is becoming increasingly important for ensuring a more sustainable future.

Therefore, we invite you to get to know the complex world of microalgae better. During this workshop we will take a closer look and examine these organisms through a microscope, reflect on their global significance for the planet and their possible use in art. Artist Lolita Tučinskaitė will introduce the participants to the living part of her artistic project – porphyridium purpureum and chlorella vulgaris microalgae, and will tell about their cultivation. Lolita Tučinskaitė combines art and science to work not only with living organisms, but also with their representation in art. She focuses on the empirical memories of human experiences of nature, their significance and vividness in the perceiver‘s memory. In her work she aims to convey tactile sensations through vision and understanding. The artist asks the question: what is more “real” – what we can understand through logical thinking, or what we can only perceive through the emotional intellect and personal experiences?

The event will be held in Lithuanian, with English translation on request.

The workshop is free and open to everyone. We kindly ask you to register by writing to: o-o@o-o.lt

Supported by: Lithuanian Council for Culture Organised by: Institutio Media in collaboration with Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Union.

An invited guest, Kamilė Jonynaitė, PhD student of the Center for Physical and Technological Sciences, will help to answer any questions the participants might have about the microalgae.
