Tutorial: Winogradsky Column – Making the Invisible World of Microorganisms Visible

With Kira O’Reilly

The tutorial invites to create Winogradsky columns using water and soil combined with other materials, from a water source nearby SODAS 2123. As we get our hands wet and muddy, we talk about the environments and eco-systems we are part of, in terms of scale, both physical and temporal. We also consider different ways our columns might function: as environmental portraits, metabolising archives, durational sculptures, social planning for micro-organism communities, or perhaps bacterial architecting.

Kira O’Reilly is an Irish-born Finland-based artist working across visual art and performance, live art and science, art and technology interfaces, as well as writing. Through her interdisciplinary practice, she considers speculative reconfigurations around The Body. Since graduating from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff in 1998, she has been giving presentations, teaching and exhibiting her art widely throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, China and Mexico.

We would like to invite you to have a glance at the invisible world of microorganisms, exploring the microbial ecologies, through the making of Winogradsky Column.

Winogradsky Column is a method of culturing diverse communities of microorganisms in a closed environment. It takes weeks and months for the different strata of micro-organisms in Winogradsky columns to appear. Therefore, we will just give a start for the future life forms to appear. During the workshop we will create columns using water and soil combined with other materials, from a water source nearby SODAS 2123. As we get our hands wet and muddy, we will talk about the environments and eco-systems we are part of, in terms of scale, both physical and temporal. We will also consider different ways our columns might function: as environmental portraits, metabolising archives, durational sculptures, social planning for micro-organism communities, or perhaps bacterial architecting.

Venue: Sodas 2123 Alt Lab (Vitebsko str. 23, 2nd floor) Supported by: Lithuanian Council for Culture. Organised by: Institutio media in collaboration with Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Union
